Clearly, Lady Di was an amazing woman. Her reputation as a princess, a mother and a fashion icon is legendary to say the least.
Growing up, my mother constantly reminded me of how much she loved princess Diana. So much so, that she bought figurines of the late princess and displayed them in the living room (the fancy one…because Lebanese mothers insist on having two living rooms). Regardless, Lady Diana was always someone in my life that I considered an icon.
So, in honor of her on her birthday, I’ve decided to make a list of some of Lady Di’s favorite fashion tips that (in my opinion) aren’t super popular. I also found that a lot of these fashion favorites of the former princess are actually trends that are popular right now.
Fun Tights
Lady Diana was always required to wear tights, and in classic Diana fashion, she added her personality to them and even had some custom dyed to match her outfits. Others are more detailed with bows and seams.
Pinky Rings
Not just one pinky ring, but Lady Diana often stacked on a bunch of pinky rings. During the early years of her marriage she was seen rocking this stacked look that included Cartier rings and her family signet ring on her pinky finger.
Colorful Eyeliner (Her favorite being blue)
Diana loved wearing her blue eyeliner (so 80’s) and it soon turned into a signature of hers. However, Diana stopped wearing colorful blue liners because her makeup artist, Mary Greenwell convinced her to stop wearing it for a softer look. She believed that people with blue eyes should avoid blue eyeliners because it takes away from their eye color.
Get Creative with your Necklaces
Diana was always trying to do something different with her style, but her necklaces take the cake in terms of uniqueness. From wearing it backwards to putting it on her head, I think we learned a valuable lesson here.
Pearls over Diamonds
Pearls are taking over this summer but to no one’s surprise, Lady Diana has always been a fan. Even as a young girl she was always seen in pearl studs and a string of pearls on her neck. Obviously over time they became more expensive and got added onto tiara’s. Nevertheless, pearls and the Princess go hand in hand.
Cleavage Bags
This may not be “trending” but I just think it’s interesting. Lady Diana was the most photographed woman of her time, and that type of publicity clearly doesn’t come with any kind of privacy. She came up with an idea to conceal her chest using a small clutch, which she called her “cleavage bag,” that matched her dress perfectly. When coming out of vehicles and bending over, she held it over her cleavage to stop paparazzi from taking photos down her dress. Now this may not be relevant for us normal people who don’t get photographed on the daily, but I still think it’s pretty smart on her part. It makes me wonder what other ways I can use my purse.
Recycle your Wardrobe
Though this may not be a style or fashion favorite, it think it’s a really important lessons from the former princess. Today’s fashion culture revolves a lot around cheap clothing that you wouldn’t feel bad about throwing out after one wear. Lady Diana has actually reworn her dresses over and over again, an important thing to see in those who have enough money to wear something new and expensive every day. So take notes, invest in your clothing and wear it more than once, the earth will thank you.
